Please Help Us Restore Swiss Valley Park!

Hello Friends,

Volunteers are needed to clean up the storm damage at Swiss Valley Park. The work days will be Friday, August 12th & Saturday, August 13th, 2011 from 7:00am-4:00pm. Volunteers should report to the front entrance to Swiss Valley Park to sign in with staff. It is recommended that volunteers bring gloves and sturdy work shoes or boots. Some rakes and shovels will be available but if volunteers bring hand tools, please clearly mark them.

We will be working on picking up debris, retrieving picnic tables, setting parking posts, picking up chunks of asphalt and raking wood chips. We will also send some volunteers to the Swiss Valley Nature Preserve to clear trails.

It is very important to have everyone check-in and out. I hope to see many of you there! Please pass this message along to others that may be interested and have a great day.

Voulenteers still needed!

Volunteers are still needed from Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois to take part in the Second Annual multi-state clean-up of the upper Mississippi River. The Dubuque Metropolitan Area Solid Waste Agency is working with Living Lands and Waters to recruit volunteers, boats, and drivers for the event on Saturday, July 9, 2011. Our work in Dubuque will complement the combined the efforts of volunteers in cities from Guttenburg to Clinton.

Those interested in volunteering should register on the Living Lands &Waters website at www.living landsandwaters.org. The cleanup will take place on Saturday, July 9, 2011 from 9 am – 1 pm, with a free lunch served at 12 noon. Please check the Living Lands and Waters website at www.livinglandsandwaters.org for location and more detailed information.

The Great Mississippi River Cleanup will remove debris; such as tires, barrels, propane tanks, appliances, plastic bottles and even a message in a bottle or two. May 14 (Saturday): National Rivers, Catfish Creek Clean-Up. Begin 9 AM at the canoe launch in the Mines of Spain. Canoe and kayak use and shoreline and road/parking lot walks will take place. May expand the area covered as participation level deems. Bring your own gloves. Walkers should wear long pants (nettles) and sturdy shoes. Insect repellant is advisable. This will be an event of Dubuque's Sustainability Challenge Game" so participation will be greater and the City will provide a lunch following the clean-up. Roadside Cleanup Safety Program

There are many people in the area that spend time cleaning up litter and illegal dump sites in the Dubuque area. The Keep Dubuque County Clean & Green group would like to thank everyone for this and is inviting groups and individuals involved in roadside cleanups to attend a safety education program on Tuesday, March 15^th at 7 p.m. at Swiss Valley Nature Center.

A member of the Dubuque Drug Task Force will be speaking about the possible dangers of items discarded in the roadside ditches. As the snow disappears, the litter appears and with it are some unknown dangers. Come and find out what to watch for.

House Study Bill 74, which would end Iowa's highly successful bottle and can redemption law, remains alive and kicking in the House of Representatives.

No word yet on when the next subcommittee will be held on this highly controversial proposal.

PLEASE FLOOD THE HOUSE WITH CALLS AND EMAILS IN SUPPORT OF THE BOTTLE BILL!

*Keep the bottle bill!

*The bottle bill drastically reduces litter.

*Statewide curbside recycling is not economically feasible.

*Statewide curbside recycling will cause a giant property tax increase.

New Orginization in DBQ Area: Energy Dubuque

Four Mounds Launches Energy Center

Dubuque, IA, 8/26/10 – The Four Mounds Foundation under the funding of the Green Industries Training Initiative is announcing the launch of the Four Mounds Energy Center, an online resource found at www.energydbq.org. The mission of the Center is to link consumers to energy efficiency resources and help support the growth of relevant industry and careers in our region. The site assists Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) with its Green Career Training Program, promoting classes and available trainings as well as serving as a directory for newly trained professionals. The online resource educates about current trends and rebate offers for energy efficiency and serves as a link to community projects including the City of Dubuque’s Smarter Sustainable City initiative. The site is Dubuque’s resource for energy efficiency.

Serving as a one-stop information center, the Energy Center supports the new energy industry by linking residents and businesses to information, energy auditors, services, contractors and trained professionals. Dubuque has been a leader among smaller cities in energy efficiency trends, projects and initiatives, which means there are many opportunities available to home and business owners. Adapting homes and businesses with energy efficient features can be a complicated process. On the physical end, a project can involve multiple building systems and needs for different services. On the financing end, layers of loans, rebates and tax incentives can make projects difficult to navigate. The Center is helping remove barriers by guiding citizens through services, financial incentives, and options available for these projects.

“It all adds up- we have a tough economy in which people need jobs and need to save energy, along with local, state and national incentives to help people change habits and change energy systems. We’re pleased to be able to help the City, our community, and the Green Industries Training Initiative connect consumers to service and newly trained professionals,” said Nathaniel Wagner, Energy Program Officer for the Center.
Funding for the Energy Center comes from the Green Industries Training Initiative through the U.S. Department of Labor as a result of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. These funds are being used by NICC to educate, train and certify individuals for the new green economy. The East Central Intergovernmental Association (ECIA) is the grant recipient.

Living Lands & Waters' 1 Hour Pilot Episode

Dear Friends & Supporters,

I have some great news

For the past 2 ½ years, I have been working with the Discovery Channel on a pilot episode called River Warriors. The 1 hour show will air on Thursday, June 10, 2010 at 8:00 p.m. (ct) on the Discovery Channel. Check your local TV, Cable, Dish network listing for the correct air time for your time zone.

The show depicts life on the river aboard LL&W's cleanup barges, and the crew's hard work to help clean America's rivers. I think you will find the show memorable, funny, suspenseful and entertaining.

Please let your friends and colleagues know about the airing of this pilot in hopes that as many people as possible will learn about the importance of clean rivers. If you enjoy the show please let the Discovery Channel know. Positive feedback will help the pilot go to series.

Earth Day Weekend Cleanup of the Port of Dubuque

We would like to ask your help in cleaning up the Port of Dubuque, Ice Harbor Peninsula and River walk in Dubuque on Saturday, April 24, as part of a 2010 Earth Day and Marine Debris awareness campaign.

Volunteers are needed to help in the cleanup effort from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 noon, that will begin and end at the Ice Harbor Park, between the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium and the Diamond Jo Casino. Individuals and groups will be assigned areas to clean up. Children must be accompanied by an adult. All cleanup and safety equipment will be provided for the event with refreshments and snacks provided after the cleanup.

The Earth Day cleanup is sponsored by several groups and agencies, but is coordinated through the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium and Keep Dubuque County Clean & Green Committee.

Volunteers or groups wishing to sign up to help in the cleanup of the Port of Dubuque, areas adjacent to the Ice Harbor, and the Dubuque River walk can contact Vicky Sutter, Volunteer Coordinator at the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium at 557-9545, Ext. 276.

Help Support Keep Iowa Beautiful - contact your legislator!

Friends of Keep Iowa Beautiful,

We need a little help. In 2006 the Governor's Keep Iowa Clean and Beautiful task force turned in a report that contained many recommendations for enhancement of the State and it's communities. Due to the transition from Gov. Vilsack to Gov. Culver the report did not get acted on. Many Iowan's put a great deal of effort into a great report.

The Board of Directors of Keep Iowa Beautiful felt those recommendations needed to be implemented. To that end a bill was drafted with the aid of Senator Dennis Black - SF 2174 (attached) that would implement a number of the key recommendations and provide funding to KIB from the Solid Waste fees transferred to the DNR. The bill is now with the Senate Appropriations committee and has been assigned to a sub-committee of Senator Dvorsky and Senator Kettering. When this is passed out of the sub-committee and goes to the full

appropriations committee we will need to have had you contact your senator in support of this. Half of the Senate members are on the appropriations committee. Your contact with any of your Senators will be important.

SF 2174 provides for $250,000 per year for four programs:

Public education and awareness on litter prevention and illegal dumping.
Litter free school initiative.
Initiate a illegal dumping surveillance program providing assistance to cities and counties.
Grants for community enhancement (Like the Keep Iowa Beautiful checkoff program)

Many of you have and can benefit from this funding if it is passed. Your support in contacting your State Senator is important right now. When it passes the Senate we will need help with contacts from your State Representative.

These are only a few things. But I also wanted to share with you a twitterview I had with Amber Mussman, Public Relations Counselor.

She wrote:
I work for Henry Russell Bruce (HRB), a strategic marketing/advertising and internet marketing firm. We have been around for 36 years, so we have a lot of experience in a variety of marketing and communications plans.

I'm a Public Relations Counselor for HRB and I spend a great deal of my time working with the media to help tell my clients' stories. One thing I have discovered since I began using Twitter last year is that it is a great tool for connecting with the media. I am able to reach out to them one-on-one, pitch story ideas, act as a source or point them in the direction of a source, and establish a relationship on a whole new level. It's amazing!

It's also opened the door for new clients. I find that it's another way in which I can network, virtually "shake hands" if you will, and get to know potential clients. I have made a few new business deals this way, and I know current clients are now using Twitter themselves to connect directly with their potential customers.

One company I'd suggest talking to would be Panchero's. I'm not sure if you follow their story at all, but they actually hired a social media manager last year and have managed to build quite a following on Twitter. They may have an interesting angle. They aren't one of my clients, but a Twitter friend of mine, Lia, is their marketing manager. You could contact her if you were interested: Lia Pontarelli [liap@pancheros.com].

When I asked her about Twitter replacing advertising or possibly ruining the advertising business she said:
I don't think Twitter is replacing advertising. I think social media of all types is great when integrated into traditional media. You can't throw out the traditional completely, but you should absolutely consider repurposing some of the money you may normally spend on things like newspaper advertising into money for internet marketing/social media marketing.

The Web has transformed the way we do almost everything, from communicating with our families to buying products to deciding who to hire. I believe it's imperative that a company (or a brand, if you will) sets aside resources to listen to what their target audience or consumer is saying online and to engage that consumer in some way. Sometimes Twitter is the best place to engage them, sometimes it's with a Blog or another social networking site. Most importantly, it all needs to work together and in conjunction with stellar advertising.

So the short answer is no, Twitter is not replacing advertising. It is, however, allowing the consumer to have instant access to a brand in a way that was never possible before. And in today's world, where we have almost everything at our fingertips online, the consumer demands that type of accessibility.

Brands should take advantage of the opportunity to discover what is important to their consumer, to listen to what matters to them, and figure out how they can use that information to build a better product. It is also an amazing customer service tool! Reach out instantly when someone complains—see how easy it is to turn an unhappy customer into a raving fan.

Hi everyone! This is a separate group from us, but it may be of interest to
you. For more information about Green Drinks, contact Raki, his email is

The Sept 2nd Green Drinks Meeting will be held in the lower level of 180
Main/ Busted Lift (or in the outside seating area if weather is permitting)
from 6:30-8:30pm (or later).

Green Dubuque will be giving away a LG solar powered Bluetooth from US
Cellular valued at $80. We will do the drawing @ 7:30 you only need to show

Dubuque Mississippi River Clean-up Opportunity

Living Lands & Waters, a non-profit organization based in East Moline, Illinois, is dedicated to the beautification and restoration of America's major rivers and to educating people about environmental issues. LL&W was founded in 1998 by Chad Pregracke of East Moline, IL, at the age of 22. Since then, Pregracke, his crew and thousands of volunteers have removed over five million pounds of garbage from the shorelines of the Mississippi, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin, Cedar, Potomac and Anacostia Rivers.

On Wednesday, August 26^th LL&W will be hosting a cleanup in Dubuque, IA from 1pm to 3pm. Volunteers should meet the crew at Schmitt Harbor off of Marina Dr. Pre-registration is strongly encourage, to ensure we bring enough equipment for all volunteers. Storm Drain Stickers

Hi,
I decided to make a brief post about the Storm Drain Stickers Project we are working on. These are adhesive "stickers" that are put on storm drains, and say on them, "No Dumping! Drains to River." There is a picture of one at the right. Thanks to Green Dubuque for the picture. We are gaining progress on these and it is very likely you see these around town somewhere.

Today we had our April Meeting, and we will get out the meeting minutes as soon as possible. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, May 27th, at the Swiss Valley Nature Center. Hey guys!

Last night we had the monthly KDCCG meeting, and these are the highlights of the meeting.

we are planning the Spring clean-up of our adopted road, Swiss Valley Road.
KDCCG has received an award .
Bruce Braley will be in town at 10 AM tomorrow (Jan 30) at the Grand River Center ~ show up and tell him what you want.
We are planning another Earth week clean-up! (stay tuned for that) It will be centered on City Island, but may expand out.
Our next meeting is on Febuary 25th, 2009 7pm at Loras (We'll announce the room later.)

We now have a Google map set up so that you guys can post information, including pictures, of some of our problem areas. This can then be used for planning clean-up events. You will still be able to use our web page submitting feature, witch will not publicly post your information. All you need is a g-mail account to post information. You can view the calendar without any account, and you can always e-mail me if there is anything you'd like on that calendar. I added an option on the "Submit a Place" form asking weather or not to post it on the map.

Early Update: Eco-Expo

Keep Dubuque County Clean & Green is proud to present an eco education day for all ages and stages. The event will be held at the Swiss Valley Nature Center from 10 am until 1:30 pm Saturday, November 15th.

Pre-registration is required, please call 563.556.6745 and ask for Jenny.

The public is invited to this free educational event. Our tentative speaker line-up includes: Bev Wagner with the Dubuque Metro Area Solid Waste Agency and Eric Schmechel with USDA/NRCS.

Booths will be open all day with information for you and your family. We will release more information about the booths at a later date.

Our web page at keepdbqcocleanandgreen.googlepages.com has moved in it's entirety to it's new home at http://keepdubuquecountycleanandgreen.web.officelive.com/. You will still be able to log in via dubuque-cleanandgreen.org, but it has not been set up yet. We can not give an aproximate time yet, but it should be soon. Our new web page will feature on-page e-mailing, on-line member sign-up, and all the old features from our previous web site.

Until now, people could only log-in to our website with the URL: http://keepdbqcocleanandgreen.googlepages.com.
This URL will soon be changing.
Rather than using such a difficult URL to remember and type, people can now use the following url to log in(which will not be changing):
http://www.dubuque-cleanandgreen.org.

Also, you can look forward to seeing our website as it is being forwarded over to Google sites later this year. This is a mandatory change we can look forward to because it will give us even more features.

Log on to www.google.com

Select “Gmail”

Create a Gmail account

In order to use the Google calendar, you must create a Gmail account.
Click on “Create An Account” and follow the screen instructions to create your account .
Follow the screen to answer all questions.

Step 2: How to Prepare the Google Calendar for Viewing

- Click on “Calendar" (upper left of screen )

Pull in Keep Dubuque County Clean and Green Calendars to Your Calendar

Go to "My Calendars"
Click on "Add" and select , "Add a Public Calendar" from the pull down menu
Type KDCCG in “Search Public Calendars” (top of screen) and then click the “Search Public Calendars” button

Select:

Click on the add button for our callendar.

What: Green Dubuque is sponsoring the 1st annual Inflation Station.

When: 12:00 - 2:00 pm

Where: the old Carmike Cinema 8 Parking lot (John F Kennedy Rd, Dubuque, IA)

Why: Properly inflated tires, not only ensure safety for motor vehicle passengers, but also translate into a more fuel efficient vehicle. According to recent reports properly inflated tires can save you up to 6% in fuel efficiency. Properly inflated tires will also wear more evenly and will extend the useful life of your tires. Properly inflated tires equals win, win, win for the environment, your safety and your pocketbook.

Who: Made possible by Green Dubuque, Inc., Key City Investments Co., Advance Auto Parts, and McCann's Auto Service.

Details:Everyone is welcome. Volunteers will insure that your tires are properly inflated and 50 cars will receive a free tire gauge, THANK YOU Advance Auto.
